Addiction Rehabs: Are You Asking The Right Questions?

If you are considering addiction rehabs as a resource for helping yourself or one you love, there are certain things that are very important to know in your selection process.

Firstly, addiction recovery is not a one size fits all proposition. There is no single type of rehab or therapy that is universally accepted as being the best.

Therefore, it is very important to match the type of therapy in rehab with your particular needs, strengths, and competencies. Ideally, a thorough assessment is done before rehab, though if that is not possible, every addiction rehab will do that as part of the admission and intake process. What follows are some basic considerations and screening questions we advise you to use in the selection process.

1. Check the accreditations of the rehab. There are two major accreditation agencies for rehabs the first is JCAHO, the Joint Commission on Accredited Health Organizations. The second is the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, CARF. Either of these certifications generally indicates a reputable and competent rehab held to high standards. They are inspected regularly.

2. Determine the type of therapy used. Is their approach religious, psychological, physical, or trauma-based? The type of therapy is important in that it should match the type of addiction you have and have a proven track record used overall long-term. Our devices to avoid unproven, "experimental" therapy in favor of long-established practices.

3. Obtain a copy of the daily schedule. This will often illustrate how much time is spent in group therapy, individual therapy and the variety of activities offered in the addiction rehab on a daily basis.

4. Try to determine their approach toward addiction. There are still some addiction rehabs better punitive based in nature. They should have a positive approach or philosophy based on working with your strengths. Does this look like something you can use as a basis for rebuilding your life?

5. How much help will they give you toward continuing care? Proper discharge planning and continuing care is a vital element in the recovery process. Studies indicate that people do almost twice as well if they get some level of follow-up care versus none. A good rehab provides referrals, consultation, and keeps you and your family involved in the loop. Recovery is an ongoing process, not an event that ends at your discharge from rehab.

6. Check out insurance coverage. On the financial end of things, determine if there is some patient aid available. Find out if your insurance will pay for the level of treatment you are seeking. Ask the treatment program if there are payment plans are available if you have the need. Addiction rehabs are often quite flexible in their payment scheduling. Do not let cost deter you. There is addiction care available at every price point.

Remember, there are different levels of addiction treatment in an inpatient rehab is about the highest level of care available. It offers intensive treatment, 24-hour monitoring, into controlled living environment. The trend in drug and alcohol rehab's in modern times to make a personal assessment on the length of stay in the time frame is flexible. The days of her rigid 28 day program are pretty much gone.

Every individual's addiction and recovery has unique individual features and markers and needs to be addressed in a holistic individual way. You can use the questions proposed as a screening device for any rehab you are considering. It is very important however to not get hung up with the paralysis of analysis.

If you or someone you love needs help, it is critical to get it as soon as possible and not delay the process. Addictions are often a matter of life and death.
